DIGIVangelist
Apple Photo Booth Fun. Every year at PAHFEST:GRANTS, the capitol of the PAH NATION, we will be giving out the EARSXXI "Keeping the Torchlit Award" as well as throwing our EARSXXI "DIGITAL AMNESTY" CONTEST. One of the things that bothers me about modern society is the way we just throw things away and I'm not talking about basic trash...I'm talking about tools, the products (including art and craft) made by these tools, and, worst of all, the people who used the tools to make the products. With Digital Amnesty I want people to feel that their digital work, whether it was made with a Fisher Price toy video camera or Canon XL1 or a Panasonic Vericam, has another chance to be seen and celebrated for what it is. I don't care when it was made just as long as it was made electronically and is 7 minutes or less. We just worked things out with the cutting edge company WITHOUT A BOX which is helping to make content more accessible for the people by the people like EARSXXI is. You will now be able to submit your work to the EARSXXI "DIGITAL AMNESTY" Contest via WITHOUT A BOX. The DigiVangelist is looking for work that speaks from the heart to the heart. Work that elevates the Human Spirit. Work that celebrates GOOD WILL AND CONNECTIVITY while being uniquely yours. I don't mind dark stuff as long as there's light at the end of the tunnel. I personally believe if you keep the devil down he strikes back harder. It's all about keeping the balance, understanding and compassion for others, as well as community empowerment. If you have something you would like to submit go to www.pahfest.com or www.earsxxi.com. There is a $7.77 submission fee to help pay for off setting our costs with the PAH ON-LINE theatre and will also be used for our non-profit digital empowerment and global creativity causes. The winner will receive a $777 cash prize given with a special EARSXXI "DIGITAL AMNESTY" Trophy. So look through all your digital work or create new work for the annual EARSXXI "DIGITAL AMNESTY" Contest.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
For helping to keep the real traditions like going to Redondo pier to get the seafood for our traditional Italian Christmas Eve feast. For not being too proud to help out in the kitchen or any where else for that matter. For visiting your brother out in the middle of the desert when it was over 120 degrees when no one else in the family would. For teaching my son the subtle nuances of Monolopy and poker as well as going to his baseball games. And, for coming up with witty expressions like "The Late Mouse Gets The First Piece of Cheese" and magical, endearing moments like "Salamander Patrol." A very happy 50th birthday to you brother Marc...the true Lizard King.
SUNDAY WISDOM
Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love. --Reinhold Niebuhr

EXAMPLE OF A PAH UPDATE
TO PREPARE FOR CRC'S AND PAH'S ARRIVAL, I WAS SENT THESE QUESTIONS FROM MY SLOVENIAN FRIENDS. What is PAH-FEST? PAHFEST (PROJECT ACCESSIBLE HOLLYWOOD) is my digital empowerment/global creativity festival. I believe the more people embrace the artist within, share their creative selves while staying true to their inner voice, the better off we all are and our world is. The digital arena makes this possible now more than ever and we all can partake, not just a select few. PAHFEST is about taking exclusive Hollywood off the pedestal and bringing it "down" to the people via Digital Technology. PAHFEST is about celebrating our collective HUMAN SPIRIT as well as the unique communities we come from. I'm extremely excited about PAH coming to Slovenia. Who would you like to see participating in PAH-FEST? Not just filmmakers, I'd like to see how a plumber, fisherman, taxi cab driver, sculptor does at making a 1 minute Cell Phone Art piece based on a surprise topic I give them. What is Hollywood? Hollywood is considered the Filmmaking Capitol of the World. We can learn from Hollywood's great history. I come from what many consider one of the last great Hollywood Dynasties...but, the times have changed and now Hollywood needs to learn from this brave new digital arena and open its doors to fresh new voices from around the world. What is film? To me, it is both the opera and epic novel of today. What's your first film-related memory (which film, where, what)? I remember seeing Walt Disney's Pinnochio in Naples, Italy when I was 5. I remember having a crush on the Blue Fairy. Is there a particular film that 'marked' you? Three films actually 1. Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. I was 8 years old. My father projected a 16mm print of it for us. It was a big event. I can still remember how powerful it was, larger than life. I was eager to make films because of it. 2. Attack of the Giant Leeches. I was 9 nine years old. I saw it on television at my grandmother's house, Seymour's Creature Feature I believe. It really got under my skin, so I started to make scary Super 8 movies with cheap looking monsters in it. I liked to scare the kids in my neighborhood. 3. Fellini's La Strada. I felt akin to it...the loneliness, the circus, the simplicity. I made a little super8 film called "The Unknown Circus" when I was 10 because of it. My brother Nicolas Cage played a jealous clown who kills the tight rope walker for stealing his girl. I think everything I do, including PAH, has a little circus vibe to it. I can't help it. When you meet your film-making relatives, what's the main topic of discussion? Food, Art, Baseball, Music and Politics. What is better than film? FISHING. But in terms of celluloid or digital, I don't think it's a question of what's better. I think our world will all go digital quicker than we all think. This is primarily because of economics as well as accessibility. And it is important that we learn to keep the human touch alive through good storytelling, so we stay connected and not just plugged in. But, that's why they call me "The Digivangelist". In terms of human expression... Highest Level: POET. It doesn't matter if it's film, literature, painting or music. What's the connection between food and film? Both Francis and I make films and we both like to cook. What's the link between bikes and film? Both Nicolas and I make films and we both ride bikes. Now the link between FILM, FOOD AND BIKES will be my new TV show THE BIKERCHEF...which I will be unveiling later this year. Who is Jan Cvitkovic? A very talented poet filmmaker from Slovenia who I met in Germany. I met him at Torsten Neumann's Oldenburg Film Festival. We were very different in terms of our outlooks on life. I felt very positive, he felt very negative. I would say, "we need to save the kids." He would say, "why not just let them die." We drank together, test drove a new Audi together, and judged films together. In the end, we became good comrades. How do you imagine Isola Cinema? Something tells me that besides discussing the creative process, great cinema, the human condition and watching wonderful Slovenian films, there will be great food and some drinking involved. What do you think about the Isola Cinema poster and it's slogan (Persistence of Vision)? I love the poster and the slogan. It fits with what I have been preaching at EARSXXI. Artists are the shamans today. They need to guide the rest of humanity by steering the "everybody boat" with their persistence of vision. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE SPEAK SLOVENIAN? IF SO, WHAT DOES BELOW MEAN? to ze mam, ampak posterja pa ni...
BIKERCHEF FRIDAY
Until I get my BIKERCHEF show set up, which is looking more and more like it will happen in June of this year, I will trade off my friday's with BikerCHEF shot by Bailey vignettes or PAH updates. Believe it or not, I'm starting to get a little tired trying to keep up with my self imposed blog schedule. What's interesting about our new BikerCHEF concept when it does happen is that I will be more like a modern day Marco Polo...really embracing my Italian roots while exploring all peoples and cultures. It will be an adventure/reality/good well show. I will still cook a meal for all the friends I meet in each episode, but it will be a symbolic meal, a meal that celebrates life, differences, and the fact there is room for everybody at my table.

CRC PRESENTS (REDUX)
Apparently I posted something that wasn't exactly Damian's. It was Damian's friend, Mario Rivera. Damian explains below: The spin: I meet this talented musician and overall funny guy named Mario Rivera. I cast him in the Olive vs Onion and we worked on several projects together after that. He needed help on his art project and I had been teaching him FCP so I helped him on his project and this is what he came up with. We were supposed to show my piece and then what he did, but due to technical issues we reversed them. ......and my friend doesn't care. But I don't take credit for something that isn't mine. I will post a comment on the blog that I reversed the order of the clips and I really wanted to show Mario and that he composed all that music in Garage Band. Okay, so we all know that we like Mario's work. But, now I will post what I saw when I first met Damian...Olive Vs. Onion.

While I was involved with Flickson66/DigiFestSouthwest/DukeCityShootout, I ran into a young, very energetic, very earnest Albuquerqian filmmaker. He was working freelance for a magazine/marketing firm doing commercials and such. I can't remember the name of this place, but I could tell that he was the place's "boy wonder"--sort of like PlasterCITY's Michael Cioni and Ian Vertovek. He showed me the commercial spot he was working on. It had a large coctail Olive Man and Onion Man hangin' out at the bar. I remember remarking how I liked his sense of humor as well as his artistic eye. He showed me some more of his work. He definitely had an art and music background. He was also very skilled at FinalCUT PRO. But, what impressed me the most about him, was his New Mexican touch. It was as if whether he liked it or not, the deep culture of his state guided his unique creative style and sensisibility. His name is Damian Montoya. He is now part of the EARSXXI/PAH team. He is also my DigiPostle. I am grateful and very thankful to have him on board.

APPLE PHOTO BOOTH FUN. FINAL CUT PRO STUDIO 2: The much anticipated new Final Cut will be out in May! The newest feature to the family of studio applications is Color. Color is a color grading and finishing application that according to Apple would cost thousands of dollars on its own. This is probably the best thing that FCP could have implemented, because the color correction was probably its weakest attribute. There is a new video compression format call ProRes 422, which allows you use uncompressed HD footage at SD file size without loss of quality. You can also use as many different clip formats as you want on the same timeline. From what we have seen Apple took every annoying and tedious aspect of FCP and did away with it. There is a seamless workflow between applications and each application was improved 10 fold, except DVD Studio Pro. In my opinion this is the weakest application in the Studio package, but with the improvements in Motion, it looks like you could produce something very professional. If you already have the FCP Studio package the upgrade is $499.00, which is no chump change but what you can produce is well worth the money.

I've been doing the EARS blog around 4 years now. All the blogs that I have linked to mine are one's that I feel a kindred spirit with one way or another, but there's one blog in particular that has inspired me and given me ideas. It is probably the one blog that has influenced me the most. It's a very academic, but at the same time gentle and artistic...not something that is easy to do. It is RB's SUCHSTUFF blog. Today I would like to present her blog as a work of art. Here's a wisdom selection from her blog: none of them extraordinary It seems to me that the soul, when alone with itself and speaking to itself, uses only a small number of words, none of them extraordinary. This is how one recognizes that there is a soul at that moment, if at the same time one experiences the sensation that everything else--everything that would require a larger vocabulary--is mere possibility. -- Paul Valery, quoted in W.H. APPLE PHOTO BOOTH FUN. Buyers' remorse: Google bought YouTube for more than 1.5 billion dollars and countless copyright lawsuits later they now have a new headache to deal will. It seems that NBC, News Corp., AOL, MSN, Yahoo and MySpace have all joined forces with Comcast to have their own video site. Their goal to have "quality" protected content on as many sites as possible all the while getting YouTube to take down their protected content. Comcast already has an On Demand Channel dedicated to user generated content and is a large supplier of high speed internet, it only makes sense to partner with web giants. Google is a innovative company though, I'm sure they have something up their sleave. For FCP fans: Apple just released news that Final Cut Pro Studio 2 will be released in May. A list of upgrades will be coming shortly but a VP at Apple said this will be the biggest upgrade in a pro application that we have seen.

DUCATI UPDATE
The Apple Concerto for Ducati Opus 1098 is now, in part, part of the APPLE 2007 REEL being unveiled now at NAB. They used quite a bit of our Ducati commercial to demonstrate this incredible awesome upgrade to the FINAL CUT PRO SUITE. Apple has just given everybody the tools to do what the big studios do at a incredibly reasonable price. Now it is up to you to build your unique voices, create fresh content from the heart, communicate, connect and make a difference to the "Everybody Boat".

ON THE ROAD TO DALLAS/PRELIMINARY PAH MEETINGS DAY 1
Ms. Jalilvand gave us a tour of Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet High School in Dallas. The students I met there were very gracious and eager to talk about their art and personal vision. To me that is a sign of an excellent faculty, empowering their students with training and knowledge as well as nurturing their unique inner voices. I told the students that art was as important as toothpaste--their artistic endeavors help to keep our universal HUMAN SPIRIT from decaying into oblivion. So, they needed to take their CREATIVE PROCESS lessons seriously and realize how important they are to the "Everybody Boat." I already know old man PAH would be honored to have them join the PAH NATION.

APPLE PHOTO BOOTH FUN. There was YouTube before the Internet? Yes, it's called Public Access. The DigiVangelist is constantly looking for new and inventive ways to communicate stories, but sometimes it is best to look to the past. Public Access has been hosting local community based programming since before the Internet. Many of us know about the Public Access channels in our community, but like most people out there, you may have the opinion that Public Access is really bad television. Did you know that most of them have equipment and edit bays for your disposal? More and More people are generating content for the web to reach out to the world community, and this is great, but one should remember the local community. Speaking with a Public Access Program Coordinator, he said, they would love to have "quality" user generated content, but people think the Internet is a better outlet. So, remember the more outlets you have the better chance you have of touching someone with your story, and you should take advantage of every one of those outlets.

Apple Photo Booth Fun The new Slingbox: Due out at the end of September the new improved Sligbox has some nifty new features. Notably it works with the MAC OS. Slingbox allows you to watch your television programs from anywhere in the world on your PC or your cell phone. The new Sligngbox Pro is one third of the size and can now has four AV inputs including HD. The device also has zero learning curve, once set up on your computer it mimics whatever remote you are using for a particular device such as your cable remote or TiVo remote. It will be interesting to see if it will work with iTV. So what's the best way to watch your TV programs on a cell phone? LG VX9400: This phone has a swivel screen which rotates 180 degrees to provide wide screen viewing. It also has built in rabbit ears for better reception. It is currently only available with Verizon, and works with V Cast mobile. The nice thing is that watching Television does not use your minutes, but you must subscribe to V Cast, which will add about 15 bucks a month to your cell bill.
